Remember that Pope Leo III had sought political aid from Charlemagne and his army against rebellious nobles in Rome in 799 AD. Because of Charlemagne's help against Pope Leo's opponents, he was crowned by the pope as "Emperor of the Romans." What appears at first glance to be a simple gesture of gratitude, will later haunt the Church and kings of the age. Who has more power: popes or kings?
The feud between King Henry IV and Pope Gregory VIIis no exception; it perfectly showcases the ongoing debate of power between these two respected positions in Medieval society.
Using the information on page 252 in your textbook, follow the struggle of these two men. Create a succession of six pictures that illustrates the fight over power that is ensued. These should be drawn and colored. You may insert conversations and captions where appropriate.
